FACTS ABOUT THE PRAYER LINE

This article is being written because I have had so many calls from people concerning the prayer line in our home.

After spending many years in the ministry, I still had a desire to work for God and His Church.  When the Solemn Assembly was scheduled in 1993, I called Brother Robert Pruitt and asked about putting a phone line in our home to be used for anyone to call to get information.

After the reorganization, I mentioned to Brother Pruitt that we might use that line for a prayer line for the church.  He only asked in whose name the phone would be listed.  I told him Irene Gaddis and it would never cost the church anything.  He said “go for it”.  We then followed with another line giving information so calls could come in 24 hours a day.  People could then call to get information about the nearest church, telephone number, pastor, overseer, etc.  Another line was added so I could fax out prayer requests, etc.  The first fax with prayer requests was June 17, 1995 with 29 requests.  Our last one was November 26, 2003.  We had faxed out a total of 11,143 requests.

By phone, Brother James Nabors said he needed to talk with me.  It was reported to him that I made the remark about the Fairview Church (Cleveland, TN) or any of the churches that have been disbanded, that if they were Church of God and right with God when this took place, they still are today.  God does not change a record when man makes a mistake.  Brother Nabors said he wanted me to know that I am wrong and not any of these people are a part of The Church of God.  I replied that they are.  He said I had no right to give my personal opinion to anyone and since the prayer line was in our home I was a bad influence on General Headquarters and they might have to change it.  A few days later he said he had gone to the Nursing Home and told Brother Pruitt what I said and he informed me that they were going to move the prayer line from our home to General Headquarters.  I told him he could have one put in if he wanted to but he could not remove our line.  We receive many different churches; sinners call wanting to be saved and many don’t even go to a church.  This line is open to help these people 24 hours a day.  This has been my ministry for thirteen years.  I have limited use of my arms and have been in a wheelchair for 26 years.  I still do my best to work for God.

You wonderful Church of God people who have called the prayer line in the wee hours of the morning have not bothered me.  I didn’t mind calling a police station to get the name of a hospital, get information for a phone number to check on you, or to notify an Overseer that someone in his state had an accident and needed help.  I say “thank you” to The Church of God for praying for me.  Somehow things have gotten off track, but God is going to get it back.  I love all of you.

I had one-half of a lung removed at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.  The doctor looked at me and said medical science had nothing to do with saving my life.  It was the prayers of your people that brought you through.

May God bless you,

Irene C. Gaddis
